Military Active Duty

Military, Deployment, Service, Veterans

In This Guide:

Soldiers along with their loved ones need consistent encouragement and support during deployment. While soldiers are out on the front lines protecting our freedoms, their family and friends often go without seeing or embracing them for months, sometimes years at a time. While it's hard to truly relate and understand what these loved ones are going through, your kind words and encouragement will not go unnoticed or unappreciated. This eGuide was created to help people that are struggling or missing a soldier away from home.

He or She Might Be Thinking About...

  • I don't understand why he/she enlisted in the military.
  • Our family isn't the same with him/her gone.
  • This deployment is going by so slow.
  • Only "xxx" days until this deployment is over.
  • I hope he/she comes home safely.
  • Whenever I haven't heard from him/her in a while, I can't help but think the worst.
  • I never stop worrying.
  • I miss him/her.
  • I can't sleep at night because of the nightmares and bad dreams.
  • Nobody understands what I am going through. They just don't get it.
  • I am tired of everyone feeling sorry for me.
  • I feel like he/she chose the military over me and our family.
  • Is this going to be the last deployment? Is he/she going to re-enlist?
  • I wonder what he/she does during the day. Is there any free time?
  • I have no idea where he/she is.
  • Does he/she miss us as bad as we miss them?
  • What if he/she gets killed in combat?
  • What if he/she is a completely different person when the deployment is over and it's time to return home?
  • What can I do to help him/her?

Words That Might Be Encouraging

  • I will be in your part of town next week after work. Can I pick up the kids and take them to the park so you can relax and have a little bit of time to yourself?
  • I want to send him/her a care package. Do you have any recommendations on things he/she might like to receive?
  • We are missing him/her right along with you. Where can we send our letter of encouragement?
  • He/she would be so very proud to see how well you're doing.
  • You look fantastic! I'm proud of you for juggling work, the kids, and staying healthy.
  • I'm bringing dinner and wine over on Friday. What should I pick up for us to eat?

Words That Might Be Discouraging

  • I feel terrible for you.
  • I'm so sorry you're having to go through this alone.
  • The deployment will be over before you know it.
  • Just imagine how hard it is on him/her being gone.
  • Let me know how I can help.
  • You're tough, you'll be just fine.
  • I feel bad for his/her kids. It's got to be tough on them.
  • I bet you're so lonely.
  • I hope he/she isn't in a war zone.
  • Have you heard from him/her lately? I hope everything is okay.
  • When does he/she get to come home?
  • You've got to be exhausted.
  • You poor thing.
  • Why did he/she join the military?
  • Is it hard raising a family by yourself?
  • It's kind of selfish for him/her to run off and leave you alone to take care of the house and kids.
